For the last few days I have, in addition to the usual photographs and videos, been making sound recordings while walking around Goose Fair. Not only that, but just in case anyone wants to listen to the sounds of the funfair then I have been uploading the recordings for literally tens of people to listen to. Sound wise there are a few things that are nice to listen to and I was wondering (while listening back to these recordings) about taping certain separate sounds. The music played on the rides is one such sound, especially combined with the samples of 'roll up roll up' type shoutings, and another is a sound that is sadly on the decline - the barker. Now that Goose Fair doesn't have sideshows the show men and women are reduced to shouting about the virtues of Hook-a-duck and similar. At Goose Fair there is one man who runs a stall near the (by which I mean the) mushy pea stall who runs a stall that gives away huge cuddly toys as prizes, and he never stops talking. He operates on a loop but that doesn't matter because people generally walk past and only catch it once, but the fact that he can go on for ages without stopping is admirable. I would love to set up a recording device next to his stall and capture him over the full day. Obviously I have a few ramshackle clips online but perhaps next year I will plan ahead and have something a little more prepared. It could be the worst possible idea for a podcast, but then again it could be a work of Turner Prize worthy art. Only time will decide.
