My enjoyment of musicals is well documented (don’t call it a guilty pleasure – I don’t feel in the slightest bit guilty about it), so the thought of settling down to watch a newly acquired DVD of Phantom of the Opera was most welcome. I had never seen this particular show before so was keen to tick it off the list, we settled down with snacks and wine and almost immediately Mandi was hooked as she loves the story. It soon became clear that this was not going to be on my list of best musicals or even best films as it didn’t grip me one bit. Maybe I should have read the book or watched it on stage first because this film version had rather a lot going on and to borrow a phrase from Peter Griffin – it insisted on itself. Before the film ended, in fact it was probably less than halfway through, I noticed that it was midnight and my eyes were heavy. Almost as if by magic the clock on the mantelpiece spun forward to four o’clock this morning and Mandi had finished the film before leaving me to it and going to bed. Jack was cuddled up next to me so we both made our way upstairs where I slept further until midday giving me roughly twelve hours of much needed beauty sleep. As I usually manage on four hours or less this was one of my semi-regular occasions when my batteries needed charging.

For some reason I didn’t have time during the week to record the podcast for today and certainly couldn’t be bothered when I woke up so I knew that I would have to do something I am not a fan of, recording it in the evening and releasing it as soon as possible. This puts me under unnecessary pressure and leaves room for more things to go wrong. My curse guardian was making up for letting me off the hook yesterday and was working especially hard today; she was obviously on double time as its Sunday. This wasn’t going to be an immediate problem though as I was going to record it when I returned home from my dad’s house, and we had a lovely roast pork dinner to fill up with first.

Although the laptop survived the virus of last week it very nearly didn’t survive the recording session this evening because I came dangerously close to throwing it out of my office window. Everything seems to be working much slower now, (it always takes me a while to get back to full speed when I’ve been ill so I understand) with the recording programme freezing periodically or just deciding it didn’t want to work. A simple half hour podcast took two hours to record due to a lot of coughing and spluttering from the equipment. The finished product was a tad crackly in places and there are a few gaps where a song didn’t start when it should have done, but I felt that at least I had put a podcast out which is better than not doing so.
