Last night was the second gig
of our club night ‘Bowie’, again at Plan B in Nottingham city centre. The
original intention was for me to DJ and Mandi to take money on the door, but
now that we don’t charge an entry fee Mandi helps me on the decks. By decks I
mean CD and not vinyl, I don’t think I’d even remember how to DJ with vinyl
anymore it’s been that long. Working with Mandi is good fun, especially as it’s
probably the only area of my career she is that bothered with.
The first time we did this we
were in the downstairs bar, which meant that we had a lot of passing trade
coming in off the street, (like the twat who asked for Nine Inch Nails and Gary
Numan songs) which in turn helped us financially. Last night we were upstairs,
so on one hand we only drew the attention of proper David Bowie fans, but on the
other hand they weren’t using the upstairs bar. As we were only getting commission
from the upstairs bar this was a problem at first, as people were entering the
downstairs and buying a drink before coming up to see us and enjoy David Bowie.
Financially and attendance wise this wasn’t a patch on last time we did this
gig, and although I took comfort in the fact that downstairs didn’t seem to be
that busy either, I think we are better off downstairs. The good thing is that
the venue doesn’t charge anything, so we didn’t lose money and came away with
more than we went in with, but a few more people would have been nice. A few
people spun me the traditional line about January being difficult as people are
still skint from Christmas. As yesterday was the last day of the month and a
Friday, I assume it was payday, so that is something I couldn’t take comfort
in. Maybe there just aren’t many David Bowie fans in Nottingham? I can’t fathom
why you wouldn’t be a fan, but I assume it happens from time to time.
We are going to stick with it
though and plan another one for the end of February. It might have been partly
our fault as our printer has needed fixing, and we fixed it and printed the
posters with days left rather than weeks. In fact, I may opt for every other
month and see if that helps. Someone who was there was a man I previously only
knew through Facebook, Jim. Jim organises a David Bowie convention and seems to
be quite a well known Bowie student, so it was nice to see him at my gig.
Afterwards we got talking and he suggested putting something on together with a
band too as there are plenty of Bowie tributes around. I’m not a massive fan of
the tribute band, but I am a fan of sizeable bar commissions so that might be the next step.
