Picture from Nottingham Operatic Society
They have done it again. Nottingham Operatic Society, who I am on record as wondering why these people have day jobs, are staging a short run of the Mel Brooks musical adaptation of The Producers. I have missed the last couple of productions by this hugely talented group, but am so glad I didn't miss this one. After performing, in recent years, Hello Dolly, Oklahoma, Annie and Hairspray, it must have been nice to let their hair down and go for it with such a gloriously bad taste show as this. The music was written by Mel Brooks as a remake of his own film, so you knew that you were in for a treat with no holds barred humour and rudeness.
If you don't know the story then you will have to look it up for yourself, the best way would be to start with the 1968 movie starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. Presented on a minimal set they performed as well as any West End or Broadway show and the laughs were plentiful. Next year they are doing My Fair Lady, another favourite of mine that I can't wait for having seen the film.
The idea explored in The Producers gave me food for thought regarding how possible such a stunt would be nowadays. Part of me would love to stage a kazoo recital but of course I know that I am the only person in the world that wants this sort of thing to happen. What if I was to hire out a theatre, or even an arena, to stage a one man kazoo show (possibly at Christmas seeing as I have an album to plug and another one on the way this year) and take out an insurance policy against it not selling out? I would be quids in wouldn't I?
