Picture from Sabotage Times

While filing away museum pieces of my working life into what I rather grandly call my archive (you might want to call it 'the pile of boxes in the corner of my office') I found a spike of home recorded CDs with S.O.C.C.S. written on them. At first I had no idea what this meant until I put one in my office CD player (which is currently playing the life out of Give Up The Ghost, the new album from The Wild Man of Europe) to investigate further. The discs contained something I had practically forgotten about from the Sherwood Radio days when I recorded a short-lived show called Steve Oliver's Covermount Cassette Show which ran at some time on a Monday night after Notts Live. This started off as a good idea but it was something I never really got a proper handle on, the original editions were once on a Soundcloud page which I deleted a long time ago, and I revisited the concept with a later podcast series called Covermount, which is still online. These are actually quite poorly made when I listen back to them and still feel as if I didn't give this project my all. When I first thought this up I had wanted to get in touch with some of the more obscure bands (if traceable) to talk about their brief period of time as an NME favourite and possibly get them to record the song live especially for the series. I feel that I should make an attempt to do this series properly one day and see it through with the NME tapes especially but also the give-aways from Melody Maker and other now defunct publications. Of course this is a matter of time as each podcast episode, if the completed article was how it first appeared in my vision, would take weeks, maybe a couple of months to bring one edition from handwritten notes to finished product. This means that I have to either release it sporadically or in series blocks that I record and then release weekly, both of which will take years to complete. The same problem applies to Moonage Daydream, another time consuming series that means I have to comb through David Bowie's life and career and do shitloads of research, selecting interview clips and songs to knit together a narrative.

This highlights how important your donations through the PayPal button are, because with a good amount of money I would be able to effectively pay myself to do things like Covermount and Moonage Daydream to the highest quality by devoting a decent amount of time to it. If you want to donate and can't wait for me to produce a documentary, comedy sketch, short film, or podcast that will be made available for free, then you could of course buy a Sunday Alternative bag or t-shirt or download an audio book from my shop page. If you are really wanting to make me work for it, then I could record a cover version of the song of your choice on kazoo, who could ask for more?

The Sunday Alternative Podcast #45 is available from here.
