For reasons I am not entirely sure of, the Nottingham Post has torn my review to shreds and rendered it as disjointed and nonsensical. I read it on my phone on the way home from town and didn't recognise it as my work, I must have written it because my name is on it but it has too many holes in now and all context is lost. Yes, Cheshire and the Cat are a great band but I didn't just say they were great and leave it there, that isn't reviewing. After going to the trouble of writing two versions, I at least hoped that the online version would have been left alone as there isn't the space restriction to consider so those readers that care about my opinion could have read an unrestricted account of my version of what happened on Sunday night. This isn't a review it is a list of things that happened in the order in which they happened, that might suit some people but it doesn't really say anything about what happened. Although by my own admission the print version makes little sense with all of my own cuts (to take it down to the required 450 words) I am now dreading what the final outcome will be tomorrow. The usual entertainments editor Simon Wilson is on holiday this week so I thought I would be safe from too much of a mauling as I doubted that his stand in knew of my occasional propensity for submitting two versions. Even Josh Wheatley criticised the review for being middle of the road, I assume he missed my post on Facebook explaining that I had been the victim of the editorial scissors.
On the subject of editing, I have listened back to the podcast I recorded yesterday and found that I still have a way to go when it comes to the fading mechanism and come across in some places as a bit trigger happy when I bring the song in. It doesn't really matter though as people don't tune in for me when there's so much great music around. I still have Sunday's to record to hopefully I can do a slightly better job at it this time around. Not that I am too bothered, or have ever been, about sounding slick and polished, I prefer to let the music be the star of the show and have done so since I was on Sherwood Radio where I played brilliant music but had yet to learn how to be a radio presenter so I sounded terrible.
The Sunday Alternative will return soon.
