Mandi once attempted to get me to watch the first Star Wars film (which when I was a kid used to be called Star Wars but now apparently carries a longer title), and although I gave it a chance I couldn't get into what appeared on the surface to be a silly film for children. The same thing happened when she thought I would enjoy Lord of the Rings, I didn't, I gave The Fellowship of the Ring enough time to not know what the hell was happening. At least I tried to watch something out of my usual remit, Mandi just refuses to watch some things I recommend, I even managed to get her to watch American Graffiti once but she didn't enjoy it despite it being the best thing George Lucas has ever made. Another area of Mandi's film interest is the superhero stuff, something I have only a passing interest in. I enjoyed the first run of Batman films that started with Michael Keaton's portrayal in 1989 but they got a bit silly towards the end but improved with Batman Begins in 2005, and the Superman films with Christopher Reeves are fun to watch now thanks to the quality of effects which look almost stone age nowadays. What I am not is one of those people who pick holes in plots and contradict each passing sub-plot as something that could never happen, (apart from the fact that Harvey Dent was a black man in 1989 (Billy Dee Williams) before being portrayed by white actors Tommy Lee Jones and Aaron Eckhart), so I take each film as it comes.
Last night, after our Stars in Their Eyes gambling session of course, (a rollover due to neither of us predicting the show winner which means that we start next week with 15p in the prize fund), we watched Iron Man. While I wasn't particularly bothered about it I decided that it was a harmless Saturday night type of film, a disposable adventure film that doesn't require a great deal of thought. What actually happened was that I found myself getting drawn in to the story and asking questions about each character, so now I have agreed to watch the rest of the films in this thread. However I do wish to watch them in order, which means that apparently I have already stepped out of line because we should have watched another film first but I'm sure it won't cause too much of a disturbance.
I'm still not watching any of the Star Wars films though.
