I've been asked on several occasions why I don't put on my own gigs, something I have resisted for a few reasons, mainly that it sounds like a lot of hassle. Another factor is of course the fact that I am not everyone's cup of tea so I might find it difficult to get noticed given my propensity for saying what I think rather than what others want to hear. Now that I have publicly criticised the so-called champions of Nottingham music for not going to gigs unless it's a big deal, I can't imagine anything I stage turning up on any of the 'gigs of the week' lists. It isn't that their approval bothers me as such because most people couldn't give a shit what they (or I) think, but as the outsider within the Nottingham music scene I am wary that if I fuck up people will revel in it, literally. However, this lunchtime I posted this on Facebook.
I don't usually get a massive response when I post on Facebook so I wasn't expecting a lot. When I looked again though at the first flush of likes and comments I realised that I could be on to something, and that is when my brain started ticking. Throughout the day I received a lot of positive feedback so I knew that I had the support of a large area of the local music scene, something that I was already aware of, so I knew I was onto something.
The live version of the podcast/radio show is something I have wanted to do in some form for a while now and I don't want to limit it to Nottingham artists. I'm concious of the fact that Nottingham isn't exactly short of outlets and promoters so I don't want to book people who can be seen most weeks. All I need now is a venue and it will be all systems go. Obviously I don't want to rush things so it won't happen straight away as attention to detail needs to be my big consideration. The whole thing will be filmed for The Sunday Alternative YouTube channel and I'll use audio material for the weekly podcast.
On the subject of the podcast, it won't be happening this weekend as my computer has finally given up. We loaded the recording software into Mandi's laptop but couldn't get it to work so of course my mood spiralled out of control. This always seems to happen when things are going well, as if I should stop trying and give in to the curse guardian; if I hadn't mentioned doing live gigs and gained all the positive feedback then the laptop would have been fine and in addition to having to take a week off from the podcast I wouldn't have wasted a week recording Bowie Day only to lose it.
This week's edition of The Sunday Alternative can be heard here.
