This evening was truly one of
those ‘I love my job’ moments, spent as usual for a Tuesday at ROFL Audio
studios in town recording a live session for my American radio show. This
weekend will see the 63rd show broadcast, where does the time go?
Before we know where we are it’ll be time to celebrate the big century. I still
find it hard to believe that I do a radio show in America; it’s a strange thing
to imagine even now.
Lisa De Ville was my guest
tonight, who is one of those people who I don’t know whether or not I have met
before because I am in touch on Twitter and Facebook. I’m pretty sure we have
spoken before and have certainly been in the same building at the same time on
a few occasions. One such occasion that I know of was the launch party for ROFL
Audio, so at least I didn’t have to give directions on this particular
occasion.
Dave was on the control desk
and Joe and Jack were on technical duties in the performance studio, and got
everything together incredibly fast. As Lisa was just using an acoustic guitar
it didn’t require a great deal of putting together. She was about half an hour
late due to public transport issues, but we soon seemed to catch up with
ourselves and got all of her set recorded while we sat and listened in the
control room.
After the songs have been
recorded, as is our routine we have a drink and a relax in the control room,
and generally swap tales and take the piss out of each other. There was wine
available this week, leftover from a do at the studio last week, so Lisa and I
had a glass and Dave and Mark had a can of beer. Dave had also baked pumpkin
pie which was shared out, although I didn’t partake as I was full from my
weekly meal-deal and cannot stand pumpkins. There are several topics of
conversation that we return to on an almost weekly basis; my habit of having
two cups of tea at the same time (at home, nobody at the studio has ever seen
me do this) or the fact that I have an Elvis in Vegas style onesie are two
frequent back-references that resurface. A few weeks ago I mentioned that I
sometimes eat dry cereal, not a full bowlful, but I do stick my hand in the box
while making a cup of tea and eat Corn Flakes like crisps. Before this subject
had been revisited, Lisa had re-introduced this particular conversation which
gave me an opportunity to be a bit smug about the fact that I am not the only
person who eats dry cereal. Just when I thought I had found a supporter for at
least one of my behavioral ‘things’, then to paraphrase the song, I went and
spoilt it all by saying something stupid like I also like to eat dry Weetabix
with butter and jam on. I immediately lost the room.

After we had returned to the
studio to do the interview, we talked off mic about certain people with the
Nottingham music scene and it turns out that we share opinions about how overrated
a particular young (and very lucky) singer has been, and that certain so-called
champions of the scene are never seen out and about at gigs.
I’m going to take some
buttered Weetabix in to share out one week.
