Friday 27th September

For the last couple of weeks I have been recording The Sound of Nottingham UK on a Thursday afternoon in order to give me more time and less pressure. Recording on a Friday can be a bit stressful, especially when I have to start again. To be honest, I don’t really know what the deadline is, although I suppose it is before four o’clock on Saturday morning as that is the time on this side of the Atlantic Ocean when the show airs for the first of the weekend broadcasts. That might be taking the piss though, as I imagine they have to load the show in to the play out system. Anyway, for the last two weeks I have astounded myself with my efficiency. After I’ve recorded the live session on a Tuesday night, I take the evidence home on a memory stick. Each track is recorded individually rather than as a long set, which is better in a way as some musicians (naming no names), have a habit of tuning up in between every track, which can be catered for in this situation but becomes a pain in the arse on live radio, or on stage for that matter. When I get home I watch the repeat of Eastenders on BBC3, (that and Family Guy/American Dad are the only reason I can think of for BBC3), and have my dinner. Once I’m settled and in for the night after an exhausting evening of work, I knit everything together into what I save as a file called ‘broadcast block’. This includes the interview I do with the guests, which to give away a trade secret is recorded after the session but worded to sound like I was talking to them straight after performing the first song. My run of efficiency ran out this week, as I didn’t get round to recording until today. It all worked out fine in the end thought, and I had everything wrapped up in one take.

Mandi came back from shopping with the DVD of Mr. Popper’s Penguins, a film we saw at the cinema. I needed to go back through the blog to find out exactly when we saw it. I thought that we had gone on my birthday but it turned out to be about a week beforehand. Also, it was two years ago, where does the time go? As you can see from the blog I’ve just linked to, I was more excited about finding a Woolworths Pick ‘n’Mix bag to use for my cinema sweets. The important thing is I suppose that I managed to find this sort of trivial information out. I don’t keep a journal type diary in the traditional Samuel Pepys way, and the blog doesn’t really delve too deeply into my private life, so it’s a bit weird reading these back while I edit them and add labels. My pocket diary only keeps a few words in each date entry, usually detailing what I’ve done or are doing that day, (there’s nothing written in today’s space).
