Hands up all who remember the first time you saw Peter Kay. It might have been his nostalgic telly clips segment on BBC2's The Sunday Show. The live show recorded at Blackpool Tower was very funny....the first time round. After it was released on video (yes video, it really was that long ago!), it was shown on Channel Five who haven't stopped showing it at any opportunity, as do Paramount.
I logged on to myspace today, and on the front page was an advert for Peter's new DVD. Following on from Live At The Bolton Albert Halls he released Live At The M.E.N. Arena which was exactly the same show. Word for word, proving his ad-lib skills aren't what they were thought to be. The new DVD? THE SAME FUCKING SHOW AGAIN, but with members of the public saying his lines. Like those gimps you used to hear shouting "Garlic Bread?" a few years ago. So Peter Kay has released three DVDs of one show.
The brilliant Phoenix Nights (and as I've worked in working men's clubs I know how true to life it was), was milked with a series one DVD, then a series two DVD. Then, just in time for Christmas came... the series one and two box set. Along with the book, calendar, and so on. The spin off series, Max And Paddy's Road To Nowhere came out on DVD along with a spoof fitness DVD, and stupidest of all came a CD featuring clips of the live shows and songs from his TV shows.
The title of his big live tour was My Mam Wants A Bungalow. He must be able to buy all of Bolton by now. He needs the room to accommodate all them dead horses he's flogged!
Sold out? Just a fucking bit. How stupid does he think his fans are? I hope nobody is stupid enough to buy any more Peter Kay products until he comes up with something new. Or doesn't he have anything else to go on? Is he just going to keep going until all the money in the world is his? It won't be safe to drop a pound coin down the back of your sofa soon without having him come round for it.
With no material left, all Kay has going for him is the Comic Relief single with 'hilarious' video. But the problem will be the fact that the idea wears as thin as his routines. Cheesy cover version, Z-list cameos, how long can you stretch that?
It's a pity because I was a fan, but money has become more important than art, and that's fucked his career. I've lost all respect for Peter Kay and I can't be the only one!
