With the future of The Sunday Alternative uncertain at the moment, (the radio
show at least – the name will carry on regardless) I have been looking at ways
in which to keep my hand in. It will be some time before the online telly
version gets underway, and I’m not sure if I want to commit to a weekly podcast
with everything else I have going on at the moment. It will free up a lot of
time if I do end the radio version to be honest, as I’m not sure how I’m going
to fit everything in. I have a meeting about the comedy sketch project later in
the week and I’m working on drawing up plans for The Sunday
Alternative In Vision (provisional title) and the online cookery
series. There are other ideas that have been in limbo for far too long that I
want to get out there, and if I don’t have the excuse that radio commitments
are getting in the way then I’ll have the motivation to work in other areas.
A little while ago I said that
I was thinking of stopping the daily blog in favour of a weekly podcast,
although to satisfy my need to have everything even I’ll have to carry on until
the end of this year. While talking to my dad this afternoon he gave me an idea
for something that I think is a workable idea. I’m going to start doing a
monthly podcast that will feature a selection of unsigned music and general
chatter about what I’ve been up to, but the podcast will be available by email
only. I have set up an email address ready to save clogging up my usual
inboxes, which will be used for only sending the podcast out. (There’s time to
register to receive it, send a blank email to blogcastmonthly@gmail.com).
There are several advantages
to this way of doing it, for example I know that I will have a captive audience
as their names will be in my contacts folder. As I will know the size of the
audience, I may look into the possibility of sponsorship to make a bit of money
from it, as podcasting might be a fantastic medium for creativity without any
of the restraints of censorship, but there’s no money to be made from it. My
other advantage is having a month to plan and record each edition rather than
the stress of coming up with a weekly show. The problem is that even though I
will have a month to do it, I will of course not record the show until the very
last minute.
