Mandi occasionally likes to
point out character flaws belonging to the characters in Frasier
in order to tell me that I would do/say something similar. On the surface I can’t
understand why she thinks I have any resemblance to a pretentious, self publicising,
snob who clings on to a smidgen of local celebrity by his fingernails, but
there are times when I find myself agreeing with the main character and his
little stands against injustice. We are now watching series ten and have just
watched an episode in which Frasier Crane drove into a multi-storey car park
but decided against parking. The man watching the gate wanted to charge him two
dollars because the charge was up to twenty minutes. Incensed by this, Frasier
sits in his car blocking the gate until his twenty minutes are up and therefore
he has had his two dollars worth. It wasn’t about the money; it was all about
the principal. This is exactly the sort of thing I would do as I cannot stand
bad service or ridiculous rules.
I have asked to see the
manager on more occasions than I can remember for reasons that might seem petty
when I look back on them. If more people complained and stood their ground then
I believe the world would slowly become a better place. It pissed me off when
nobody rebelled against the ridiculous smoking ban in pubs in 2007, because if
people had dug their heels in then the ban would have been overturned by now.
The electronic cigarette was in my opinion one of the best inventions of modern
times, I take one with me to gigs to reduce my need to disappear outside in
between sets. Of course they were invented as an aid to giving up smoking, but
the reality is that they are used purely as ‘indoor fags’, that don’t cause
anyone the slightest bit of harm. This has inevitably led to certain places
banning the use of these things for a couple of mind-bogglingly stupid reasons;
they undermine the smoking ban (they don’t, they just show it up for the folly
that it is) and they cause confusion (only to stupid people). For this reason,
I make sure to make full use of the e-cig wherever I see a sign telling me that
I can’t use one. It makes my heart sing with joy when I see people smoking at
the tram stop following their unworkable new ruling disallowing it despite it
not being a 100% legal rule, now I tip my metaphorical hat to those I see ‘vaping’
in restricted areas. What are they going to do about it?
