I have said before that I am
an obsessive note taker and that I always have a pad and pen about my person
just in case. There has been one occasion before today when I have forgotten,
and that was last year when I had to scribble an idea on a cigarette packet.
This afternoon I was on my way to my dad’s house when an idea came to me, I
pulled out my notebook as I know how easy it is to forget something later on.
Disaster, I didn’t have a pen on me. My dad lives at the top of a very long
road and my idea hit me as soon as I set foot on the bottom of the road, so I
had no choice but to keep repeating the idea to myself until I got to my dad’s
and was able to write it down. Imagine the relief you experience at making it
to the toilet after carrying a full bladder around for far too long. That is
the relief I experienced at finally being able to get my idea on paper.
What I had been desperate to
write down was the title of the sitcom pilot that I am working on with Gary and
Craig, and the name of the main character. The name will probably have to be
changed because it is based on a real person’s name. Not that the character is
based on anybody in particular, but it is a perfect name for the character. It
won’t be hard for the people of Nottingham to work out whom the name is taken
from but the rest of the country will just think of it as an amusing name. Gary
said that I would be prevented from using the name and Mandi said the same when
I shared it with her. I don’t go into a lot of detail usually when discussing
the inner workings of my career with Mandi, but to have two people close to me
express the same opinion means that I should perhaps take note.
The plot might not make it
into the public domain once finished, so I am going to lobby to be allowed to
use the name for that recording before I change it in time for the series.
Another option would be to simply ask the man whose name I will be lampooning
and ask what he thinks.
Now that there’s at least a
name for the show, (which has been approved by Craig and Gary), my ability to
come up with the skeleton of an idea has opened up. Craig and Gary have their
own ideas to bring to the table on Friday so hopefully we’ll be able to cobble
something useful. I’m going to record bits of the meeting so that we have an
archive of the show’s development, and when we’re all dead it’ll be safe to let
the public hear how our meetings go.
