After all the excitement we generated about it being the first anniversary of NottinghamLIVE last week, this week we were left to crash down to earth. We had managed to break our perfect run of shows with a live guest every week, and for the first time ever it was just the three of us with the responsibility of entertaining Nottingham. To think we have organised some close-to-the-wire last minute guests, (including the time Alex Young was booked during the show thanks to what the media refer to as ‘taking to Twitter’), it was quite disappointing to find ourselves in this position. I know from The Sunday Alternative that it becomes very difficult to get that momentum back once you miss a week, but hopefully it won’t happen again. For a brief moment it looked as if we were going to pull off another Twitter victory when a singer (who I won’t name) tweeted us back and said he would come in. It would have had to have been a fairly low-tech performance with no sound engineer, the singer would have had to perform in our broadcasting room using only the studio microphones, and hence we called out for a singer/acoustic guitarist only. However, a combination of the weather conditions and the fact that he was too far away from the studio (a Nottingham musician somehow not aware of our location, weird) put a stop to our hopes of a last minute session.

Although it is sad that we had to do a show without a guest, I can’t help but think that part of the blame needs to be dealt out to the Nottingham music scene itself. The show is a pretty big deal for local acts; we have given a few people their first radio session and try our best to get the first play of new songs, so I can understand how honoured people are to be asked on. On the other hand, there is no need to be too shy to approach us and ask if we would have them on to perform, we want anyone talented to come through the doors of Trent Towers.

The show was all right in the end, although there wasn’t the usual buzz of enthusiasm at the beginning (or that might have just been me). Between the three of us we pulled together a pretty good show, mainly by stretching Cassia’s gig guide and playing from our long songs. To kill a bit of time we also replayed some of the live sessions from early last year. As good as we made the show, it would be a shame if the live music element was to vanish altogether, which is something that we have been threatened with.
