As I have said before I have
hopefully a lot of work already lined up for 2014, most of which depends on
being able to raise a decent amount of money in order to make it happen (the
PayPal button is just above this blog). While I’m at home there’s several
podcast series to get to grips with and some audio book work lined up too. It
is for this reason and the upcoming Christmas break of course, that it is a
frankly stupid idea to set myself a deadline to write an entire book before
January 8th next year. ‘Next year’ makes it sound further away than
it actually is of course; it sounds even more frightening when I use the far
more precise ’27 days’. The best writers in the world couldn’t write a book in
27 days, and I’m not the best writer in the world. I’m not even the best
fucking writer in Nottingham.
The thing is, I’ve been
bouncing ideas and writing drafts for the idea I mentioned regarding a story in
which David Bowie is the central character. A Christmas Carol
was my starting point for this idea, although the Bowie story is not set at
Christmas. I have a beginning, a middle and an end, I just don’t have much to
go in the gaps at the moment although I am enjoying this idea being in my head
a lot more than I usually do when I have an idea brimming away.
My reason for wanting the book
finished and published on Kindle by the 8th of next month is of
course because that is David Bowie’s birthday. On his birthday this year he
thrilled the world by giving us a present; ‘Where Are We Now’, his brand new
single that just appeared on the Internet in the early hours of the morning. It
would be cool (and wouldn’t hurt it publicity-wise either) to be able to return
the gift on his next birthday. Even if I decided to cancel Christmas (something
I feel strangely tempted to do this year) and work through the holiday, I don’t
think I could do it. Obviously I’m going to give it a go, but the stress might
finish me off completely. This year I am already going to be working during the
holiday, as I have The Sunday Alternative
to present on the 29th, so I’m not exactly going to be resting on my
laurels altogether at Christmas (don’t feel sorry for me, I am choosing to do
it – just remember that I don’t get double pay like normal people).
Ideally, the Bowie story is a
film. However I am writing it as a story in order to try and help to create
interest in the film version, should it ever happen. It will at least give some
idea of what I am trying to achieve. I’m keeping the details under wraps at
this stage (until it is written and published) because I don’t want someone
else to run with the idea. I will especially be keeping it quiet when I’m in
Hockley, as those bastards have had two of my ideas already.
