Tuesday 20th August

Although I’ve been doing the American radio show for well over a year, I haven’t always delivered a show every week and as such have only just made it to 52 shows. It’s a great show to do and the feedback has been positive from both sides of the Atlantic, (no offers to go out there to live though) and I want to keep things interesting. For ages now I’ve been wanting to record exclusive live sessions from Nottingham artists to play on the show, and today I finally got round to doing the first one. ROFL Audio in Nottingham city centre have been willing to do these sessions for a while now, but we were delayed by them having to relocate from their premises on Stoney Street, which was also the home of White Collar Zoo.

I had a meeting with Dave from ROFL a few weeks ago, and from then on it was all systems go. We both agreed that as good as the scene is in Nottingham, there is a certain amount of complacency around; people say they are going to do something but then don’t. There is an old expression about people needing a rocket up their arses, which could well be a motto for the city. In fact, if a travelling salesman came to Nottingham with an invention called Arse Rockets, I would buy every single one and distribute them accordingly.

Tonight’s first set from Georgie Rose went off without a hitch. I was joined by Mike Atkinson, a local music journalist who occasionally joins us on NottinghamLIVE, who I’d invited along to hopefully write about this new venture on his Nottingham music blog. We chatted while everything was being sorted, (there was a lot of wires, that’s as technical as I get), and I even made a cup of tea for Georgie’s mum.

Georgie recorded three songs and a promotional ‘liner’, or ident for the show. One of the great things about doing it in advance of the radio show is that we can take time over it. After the three songs were done, I worded the interview as if it was taking place in between the first and second song. The magic of radio!

The whole thing seemed to be over in a flash, although it was pushing ten o’clock when we were finished. I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope that they all go this smoothly every week. I couldn’t have asked for a better first guest, and will be digging this recording from my archive when Georgie Rose is a big star.
