It is a very long time since I
have been able to call myself a DJ and played in front of a room full of disco
dancers. However, I will be returning to the decks before the end of the year
to host a night in Nottingham. My main motivation is financial if I’m honest,
as a great many aspects of the music scene in this city runs on goodwill and
fairy dust, and that doesn’t pay the bills. The steady streams of money I
receive from the books and downloads aren’t a secure way to survive, and
although I’m not living on the streets, I am in quite a vulnerable occupation.
Self-employment is never the safest option, and during times like this it makes
you take stock. I am lucky enough to have managed to find a venue that doesn’t
want to take any money upfront, and will not only let you keep the whole door
takings, but give you a percentage of the bar too.
The venue would also be good
for live music, providing we can persuade people to pay to get in. I met Gary
and Craig in town this evening to introduce them to the club’s owner, but when
we got there it was empty and locked up. I suddenly felt this venture slip away
from me, and hung around with the brothers Barwell until they had to go off and
meet a potential band member. On a whim, when we had gone our separate ways, I
decided to try the club again, and was relieved to find the owner there.
Nottingham is in the quiet time at the moment, with all the students home getting
their washing done. I assume that this is why they opened an hour later than
usual, but at least I have a gig sorted out to start in the future. With there
being no overheads, I can afford to allow the night to develop rather than
worrying about getting enough people in to break even. The night should have
legs, although I’m not going to reveal the details yet, just in case someone
else steals the idea. Maybe I’m paranoid, but I can’t afford to have it happen
again after Broadway Cinema took a potentially lucrative gig from me.
