Last night I recorded this
week’s edition of The Sound Of Nottingham UK and
sent it off to America before having a shower and relaxing in a heap on the
sofa. We couldn’t be bothered with cooking so it was sausage cobs for tea. The
downside of working on a Sunday is that I can’t fully appreciate the three day
weekend for the festival of rest that everyone else enjoys. This is why I try
to really make the most of any time off that I can grab. I’m looking forward to
Monday, not that we’re going to be doing anything crazy, my dad and nana are
coming round for afternoon tea so I can have an early birthday. Mandi is
working Tuesday (my actual birthday) so it makes sense to do this. I’m at the
studio on Tuesday evening recording a live session for the American show which
isn’t something I really want to get out of.
Although I had an errand or
two today, I didn’t get up until half past twelve. Once again I had to go to
the bank and sort some shit out; they have only just sent me a replacement card
which I needed to unlock, and I hadn’t been sent a disclaimer form. They should
have sent me a form to fill in so that I could have a refund on the money that
was taken from my account. As always with Santander, they were quick to
apologise and get to the bottom of the problem, even though it was a problem of
their own making. The man behind the counter said that a letter would be sent
out but when I checked my account it had already been put back in. They really
do like to pratt people about.
I didn’t have the time to sort
out some more venues for the gig day that I’m organizing, as for some reason
the potential places were all closed by the late afternoon. As Saturday is a
big shopping day this baffles me, especially with a bank holiday coming up. On
the other hand, this won’t be treated as a proper bank holiday and life will
pretty much carry on as normal. It is strange not having Emily with me at this
time, although if I can take a positive from it, then at least I do benefit from
a bank holiday. Parents get a bum deal from bank holidays as they are going to
be off work during school holidays anyway, and as such they should be able to
use their lost bank holiday whenever they like during the year.
Most people will be aware that
I’m a big fan of the comedian Richard Herring; I’ve met him several times and
found him a thoroughly nice guy and not at all starry. I’ve written his live
reviews for the last few visits to Nottingham and interviewed him twice. He was
a big influence on me as far as using podcasts as a forum, and made me see that
there is another way to get your work out there. I read his daily blog, (which
inspired me to do the same) and during August they all concern his ups and
downs at the Edinburgh Festival. This is the month that I get a certain amount
of festival envy, and every year I wonder if I’d be able to take a show to
Edinburgh. Obviously I’m not a comedian so wouldn’t want or be able to produce
a stand up show, but I have plenty of ideas for performance pieces that I would
enjoy experimenting with. The whole rigmarole of putting on an Edinburgh show
is quite an expensive business, so I would need to find a cheaper end venue. Of
course there’s also the cost of accommodation during the one month of the year
when Edinburgh suddenly gets more expensive. I can’t use Kickstarter as I’m
going to be setting up an account with them for an attempt to get some bands
and people over to Connecticut for a publicity tour for The Sound Of
Nottingham UK.
