Saturday 10th August

We had a relaxed and work free Saturday today, which was much needed. After a bit of Pick Of The Pops over breakfast, we headed into town for a meander. There was no other reason to go into the city centre than simply to get out of the house, and after a bit of shopping we went for a coffee at Hartley's. Sitting outside with coffee and the papers, the scene was only ruined when I saw this.

Hartley's do some wonderful window paintings, and I wish I'd photographed more of them, but my enjoyment of the little breakfast characters in the above picture was spoiled by the rogue apostrophe. In fact, I had to insist that we went inside to finish our drinks as I could no longer enjoy my cappuccino knowing that it was there.

On the bus home we passed by our local chip shop, one of Nottingham's very few 'proper' chip shops. It gave us the idea to have a chippy tea, despite it not being Friday, how very decadent. We had planned to have pizzas, but I didn't mind popping out as I had to go to the shop anyway. I missed the beginning of That Puppet Game Show, which I had been wanting to see, but soon got into it. There was a lot of promise in this show as it was a brand new project from Jim Henson Productions, with Brian Henson's hand in it (no pun intended), and it was on a timeslot that demands a family friendly Saturday show. It was a bit hit and miss, and would have probably been better suited to about eight o'clock in the morning in the children's slot. There were traces of what made The Muppet Show brilliant, but the smell of BBC interference hung in the air like a fart in a lift.

A much better show was the one that followed; I Love My Country, presented by Gaby Logan with Frank Skinner (who can do no wrong) and Mickey Flanagan as team captains. This is the perfect example of what a Saturday evening light entertainment show should be all about, referred to by Skinner on his radio show as a 'shiny floor show'. Taking in elements of The Generation Game and Crackerjack, and stirred in with a healthy dollop of good old fashioned variety, this show should have been made ages ago. There is a house band who take part, fronted by Jamelia who also sings a cover of 'One Vision' as the opening theme. My only criticism of the whole thing is that Jamelia improvises the song, and doesn't sing "gimme gimme fried chicken" like Freddie did.
