The list of Nottingham music makers that I like was meant to be one of those disposable little gestures that appeared and made no impact whatsoever before gathering dust on my site while the world carried on turning. I wasn’t even sure if people would read it to be honest, and even if people did read it I doubted that it would any difference to people’s day. Then a weird thing happened as I turned on the computer to get The Sunday Alternative ready and logged into Twitter and Facebook for a quick look, people were thanking me for their inclusion.

I was flattered that it brightened up a few people’s Sunday, but I was especially flattered that they were flattered. I’m just an opinionated gobshite who occasionally sparks off something so why should it matter if I like your music or not? On the other hand, other music writers and broadcasters from Nottingham would say you were great if you recorded a week’s worth of farts onto a cassette and hail you as the next best thing, so maybe it is because of my unabashed honesty that the list was so well received; after all, if I say I like a band at least you know I do like them and I’m not just cosying up to them

Apart from The Sunday Alternative which plays music from wherever great music comes from, I have no other outlet for the local music scene any more. If NottinghamLIVE comes back it won’t be with my involvement and I quit the American show because of a perceived lack of support from the very people I was trying to give airplay. When the news broke that The Sound of Nottingham UK was no more, the messages I received were very moving indeed, but if I had carried on doing it then the show have become repetitive if I kept being sent music by the same people. It did make me wonder though about the next step. If NottinghamLIVE was to come back it wouldn’t be with my involvement, and the new Trent Sound studio doesn’t accommodate live music anyway. There is still the room for something along those lines though, it is obvious that I do still hold some regard within the local scene, and there is nothing happening that has replaced NottinghamLIVE. The show left a hole in radio and it hasn’t been filled; there are several radio stations in Nottingham that don’t go near local music so I don’t understand why nobody has bothered.

Thinking cap time!
