I was up for hours past my
bedtime (if I had a bedtime) transcribing the interview with David Nolan for NottinghamLIVE, and finally got it sent to Darren for
publication at something like three o’clock this morning, that’s dedication. To
be honest it wasn’t so much dedication to journalism as dedication to beating
all other Nottingham media to the chase. A chase that doesn’t exist anywhere
else apart from in my mind. Part of me wants to go back to the days when I’d
have been wearing a trench coat and fedora hat with a piece of card in the hat
band with ‘PRESS’ written on it, written the interview down in a notebook and
then ended the night in a phone box dictating the whole thing to a typist while
swigging from a bottle of whiskey and smoking cigarettes with no filter. Darren
would then have had to have printed the interview overnight and spent this
morning in a van distributing it to shops. Actually, recording the whole thing
on my phone and then typing it up when I got home for almost immediate
publication is a lot easier, apart from the fact that transcribing an audio is
a monumental ballache of a job. The Nottingham Evening
Post (as I still call it) are running the interview on Saturday, as
will BBC Nottingham, I don’t know what NUSIC are doing with the piece, but the
important thing is that my article is the first one published. Even though it
isn’t a race, I am pleased to have won the race.
This evening I recorded an
entire edition of The Sound of Nottingham UK for
this weekend without fucking up and having to start again. I already had the
music sorted so that was the first obstacle dealt with, all I had to do was get
through the recording, which I managed to do despite Jack being in my office
and trying to steal my biscuits. After I had recorded that and sent it on its
merry way over the Atlantic, I sorted out the music for The Sunday
Alternative. The first podcast edition drops this weekend and I
haven’t recorded it yet as I want it to be as fresh as possible. I have had a
fair amount of interest in this so I want it to be a good one, if only because
I want the name to continue. Although it will mean working on a Saturday I will
record it tomorrow. In fact this whole three day weekend will have to be given
over to work as I have so much to do. Please feel sorry for me while you enjoy
your three day weekend.
