Something that really pisses me off is this idea of certain things having their own day or week, usually as a marketing ploy. They usually make me decide that I’m going to spend that particular day doing the exact opposite, even if they declared a national bacon sandwich day I would abstain on that occasion, much like my policy of smoking more on No Smoking Day and drinking more during ‘Dry January’. The one exception is Pancake Day of course, the only day of the year when I eat pancakes; I am a mass of contradiction. For that reason, I didn’t go anywhere near a record shop last weekend. I made my feelings about Record Store Day clear in this blog, which is probably why I’m possibly the only radio broadcaster (and renowned vinyl collector) to never be asked to take part in any Record Store Day shenanigans.

The truth is that every Saturday is a day for browsing in record shops and adding to your collection, and it has been since the invention of music (probably). I remember the joy of taking your pocket money or paper round wages down to Our Price or Woolworths and walking home with the bag on show so that everybody knows that you have bought records. I went to Rob’s Record Mart yesterday afternoon while Mandi was wandering around some shops that I wasn’t bothered about (she doesn’t like Rob’s due to the fact that it’s small, cramped and smells of old records – which is exactly the reason why record collectors love it) and as usual did not leave empty handed. My Woolworths record bag wasn’t big enough for my haul of Elvis Presley, Billy Fury, Bill Haley, Jesus Jones, Daisy Chainsaw, a Top of the Pops compilation, Gary Numan, Bob Newhart, The Wombles, Lonnie Donegan, and Elton John; you can’t say I am not eclectic.
