It might just be me of course,
but there seems to be some kind of magical memory wipe that takes place during
the night once the Christmas decorations have been taken down. There hasn’t
been a year in my whole life when I haven’t gone downstairs the day after and
been overcome by a small wave of sadness that life is now back to normal. No
longer is it perfectly acceptable behavior to sit watching films while eating
cheese and biscuits, chocolates, pate and toast, nuts, Christmas cake (now
sadly renamed ‘cake’), and top it off with sherry. Reality kicked in and I
resigned myself to the fact that another Ritz cracker would not pass my lips
until December, and now I must return to whatever passes for real life in my
little world. Today we go back to work, and I am glad I made the decision to
take down the decorations yesterday, as the new week would have been made even
sadder if it had involved the ceremonial removal of Christmas.
Walking Jack this morning I
saw several real trees outside people’s houses awaiting collection. I’m glad
the council didn’t start collecting trees until today as they at least acknowledge
that Christmas ends on the 6th. It isn’t very often that Nottingham
council gets something right, if only they would pass a byelaw forbidding shops
to take down their decorations too soon or face a fine. There were also several
trees still up and some outdoor lights still clinging onto the walls of houses.
Maybe they leave them up until such time as it is required of them to flick the
switch again?
I sat at my desk today and had
another look at the projects that I hope to get through during 2014 and had a
slight crisis of confidence. It does seem like my list is getting longer every
time I turn away and look again, a bit like a Post-It note version of the
weeping angel statues in Doctor Who. One
of the first filming projects is looking like getting off the ground fairly
soon, and I’m going to attempt to get the whole thing (about fifteen minutes in
length) filmed over two days and dedicate about a week to editing and
uploading. This isn’t a project that warrants a public screening, but the
subject matter (it’s a documentary about something very close to the hearts of
Nottingham people) will mean a good round of publicity in the local media. Not
everything will be so quick to turn around of course, but I have decided to
cherry pick the particular things that can be carried out in the shortest
amount of time (allowing for preparation of course) and allow me to pull
another Post-It note off the wall and drop it in the recycling bin. A lot of
the audio jobs can be done at home so there’s no need to wait until I have
nothing to do, I can record podcasts and other such things in the evenings or
even during the night as I am quite a nocturnal worker.
Something that has gone back
to the drawing board already is the proposed documentary about The Sunday Alternative; mainly due to internal issues at the
station that I don’t feel I should talk about here at this moment. I also need
to abandon immediate plans to make a weekly video edition of the show, which is
a shame but at the same time something of a relief.
