I’ve been deliberately shutting
myself in my office just lately in order to power through all the loose ends
that I really don’t want to have hanging over me when I knock off for the
Christmas holiday. It’s the little jobs that I should have done ages ago that I’m
trying to get to grips with, uploading the American shows to their own Mixcloud
site, updating radio show blogs and pictures, The Robin
Hood Sessions podcast, and generally tidying up my desk. Hopefully
2014 will be very busy, although a lot of the filming element relies on
finance. It would annoy me if I lost momentum; it seems to have happened a
little towards the end of this year. Radio has obviously taken up a lot of my
time so I can’t complain, but this year did start off fairly well with another
book release, podcast series, and the podcast for The Maze, and returning to
Trent Sound.
Tuesday is one of the nights
that I get to leave my office and do some ‘field work’ at ROFL Audio for one of
my sessions for The Sound Of Nottingham UK. After
a bit of a bumpy ride just lately with cancellations, we were back on track
tonight with a set from The Most Ugly Child.
I can’t remember the first
time I saw them at a gig, but I first met (to introduce myself) Daniel in
January when they played on the bill with Captain Dangerous at Jam Café, and
said that I wanted to record with them. At this time I don’t think I was doing
NottinghamLIVE (I might be wrong as for some bizarre reason there is no mention
of the gig in my pocket diary) so I will have been asking for The Sound of Nottingham UK. We did have them on NottinghamLIVE in April but it was only three of the lineup,
thankfully I had the whole band in this time around.
There was a bit of a problem
to begin with, as our plan to arrive at the studio at half six to unpack and
set up went awry due to traffic and one member arriving by a late running
train. Thankfully once everything was set up the band played a blinder, four
songs in total plus a quick interview with Daniel and Stevie and it was all
over. The time flies when you’re having fun. They are one of my favourite bands
around the scene, especially as they sound so different to what else is out
there. Daniel (as you’ll hear in the interview) formed the band thanks to his
grandfather’s influence and musical education.
All the photographs in this
blog were taken by Max Johnson, bass player with The Most Ugly Child. Big
thanks to him for that, and the beer.
