Saturday 16th November

I fell asleep fairly early by my standards, about eleven o’clock last night. This meant that I didn’t take Jack for his midnight(ish) walk, and we didn’t get up until ten o’clock this morning so he must have been wondering what was going on. Dog’s systems must work differently, as I’ve never seen Jack look as if he especially needs to go to the toilet, figuratively speaking. He hasn’t had an accident in the house once since he came to live with us, and never makes a fuss to be let out. Once he knows he’s going outside though, he gets very excited so maybe he is glad to be able to finally be going. I took him over to the park for a bit and let him run around without his lead before we went to town.

For whatever reason, usually time, we haven’t been out for Saturday breakfast for a few weeks, so we made an effort today to make sure we were out of the house while the cafes were still open.

We had seen Café 101 while shopping for pet food in Castle Marina a couple of weeks ago, and decided to add it to our list. (I am available if any publication wants a column about breakfasts).

Situated on Castle Boulevard in the shadow of The Park, a rather grand housing estate under the Castle, Café 101 is a modern style café serving breakfast, jacket potatoes, salads, and the like. Mandi had the small breakfast costing four pounds, while I opted for the large for a mere ninety pence more. What the waiter brought to our table was a veritable feast of a breakfast; two rashers of bacon, two sausages, two fried eggs, mushrooms, chopped tomatoes (losing points there, it should be plum tomatoes on a breakfast), and (gaining those lost points back) homemade baked beans. Tea or coffee was included, although you shouldn’t even consider coffee with a fry up. Two little criticisms are that they were playing Smooth Radio, not at an intrusive volume but they do play one song for what seems like twenty adverts, and that on the table were bottles of Daddies Sauce. Having Daddies Sauce in a café is the equivalent of a pub serving Murphy’s instead of Guinness, or Pepsi instead of Coca-Cola; it shouldn’t really be allowed, surely HP Sauce doesn’t cost that much more than Daddies?

The staff were friendly and attentive, the tables were clean, they didn’t seem to have toilets although on asking you find that they are behind the counter. Mandi went to use it but wasn’t impressed; a café should have a decent toilet facility.

I broke my ‘no emails at the weekend’ rule today due to being in a difficult conversation with Trent Sound regarding live music guests. ROFL Audio want to host all the sessions at their studio which means they will have to be pre-recorded in advance and slotted into the show. I’m not sure if we have to pretend they’re live or not, but this will hammer a nail into both of the shows I do for Trent Sound. When The Sunday Alternative returns next weekend I wanted to make live music one of the main features, and I might as well reveal that I was planning to film a lot of footage to make a weekly video series for YouTube. The video was going to take in the live band performance, interviews, and general ‘red button’ footage that would be released the following Sunday. That might not happen now, which is something that is causing the return of the show to hang in the balance. I have a plan b but I don’t really want to have to resort to it as I want to do the show live and have a live atmosphere.
