Wednesday 28th August

I have to be honest, yesterday did not feel like my birthday at all. It’s a good job that we made a fuss on Monday as yesterday was back to work. I opened my cards after midnight this morning as Mandi has to leave the house early for work. To be fair, thirty-seven isn’t really a ‘celebration’ age is it? My next landmark is my fortieth, which I’m not going to think about until absolutely necessary.

Tuesday is of course all about America, and the second exclusive live session for my American show The Sound Of Nottingham UK at ROFL Audio in town. A little tram fail meant that my guest arrived before I did, which isn’t ideal as I do try and press the importance of arriving at the studio on time as we have a lot to get through. It was a busy old meeting with Joe Sheldon doing the engineering, (the guy who does our Wednesday night Trent Sound performances) and Darren coming by to check out the studio. My guest Angie Niccals had her mother and boyfriend with her, so it soon got a little warm in the studio.

Angie describes her genre as ‘horror pop’, and cites Tim Burton as her biggest influence. I really want to see her perform live as she gigs as a character called Johnny Reaper complete with an elaborate mask and costume. The work that has gone into this creation is phenomenal and she really has to be seen to be believed, and although I have yet to see it I do believe it.

She performed using recorded backing tracks, an electronic/industrial type of sound complimented by her wonderful operatic voice. I asked if she would like to work the project with a band, she does but is conscious of having everything under control and would need a committed band who understood what they were trying to achieve rather than just a hired backing band.

We seemed to have everything wrapped a lot faster than last week, with a five song set, interview and photos all done by about quarter to ten which meant that I was able to watch the repeat of Eastenders on BBC3. I then went to my office to write for a bit, helped along by my chocolate chimpanzee that Mandi bought me for my birthday.
