My pancake eating almost made me late for a gig that I'd been invited to in town tonight, but I arrived at Jam Café during a sound check. Pancakes are not really a suitable tea, so I was a little empty to be drinking. Not that I had a lot to drink, but unfortunately Jam Café is one of those places that don't do real ale or Guinness, and also have a bizarre draft lager on tap. I settled for canned Red Stripe.

I was there mainly to see Josh Kemp, who had invited me along. He has played live on several Trent Sound shows, (although never The Sunday Alternative unfortunately), and he is in to perform for us next month on Nottingham Live. I've played him a lot in the past, including on the American show, so I knew he was good, but I'd never seen him live before.

Josh played an acoustic set to open the night, once again highlighting the need for some kind of patrol to shut people up who talk during gigs. All the way through Josh's set there was the low hum of ignorant fuckers who thought they were in a place that wasn't doing live music. At least the people who were paying attention appreciated what they were seeing. I have said before that the man-and-guitar set up is a little over done, but Josh is one of a small group who can pull it off with talent and hard work.

Something completely different next, Audio Thieves are a band from London.

Luckily for them, their sound drowned out the talkers, and the venue had filled up a touch by now. They had a good sound, but unfortunately I haven't found their online presence so I don't know anything about them or where to listen to more.

By the time the headliners were due on, the room had filled up to a reasonable degree, making it full but without the ridiculous discomfort of everyone being crammed together with no room to even lift your drink. Band Of Jackals are a band I've heard good things about, but again hadn't got around to seeing them live. So impressed was I, that I collared them outside in the smoking area (pavement) and offered them a radio session, which I'm pleased to say they accepted.
