Amy Winehouse 1983-2011

Sometimes an obituary doesn't appear in the papers for months after the subject's death, Amy Winehouse was eulogised by the quality press yesterday. The sad fact of life being that it wasn't exactly a shock death. At least the papers were respectful to her, more so than when she was alive, something the tabloid press have been guilty of before.

When I first heard Amy Winehouse on what I imagine was Radio 2, I genuinely thought I was listening to an old jazz record from decades ago; Ella Fitzgerald maybe, or is it Nina Simone? Billie Holiday? I have a lot of songs by these artists, and this was a song I didn't recognise so an old unreleased song has been discovered. How exciting I thought, imagine the payday the person who found these tapes in an old cupboard is going to get!

Time will hopefully remember the most talented female singer of her generation for the right reasons. Okay so she had problems with addiction, and she had joined the so-called '27 club' along with Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janice Joplin and Kurt Cobain and others, and this is why she was tabloid fodder. But she was a talented musician and songwriter who should take her place among the greats.
