In order to relieve myself of
the stress involved in its making, I recorded this week’s edition of The Sound of Nottingham UK today having sorted all the music
yesterday. Despite this foresight I still managed to take a couple of hours at
this. Even though I’ve heard the songs before I always listen to everything
through prior to the recording to check for bad language that I might have
missed. American media has a lower tolerance of swearing to start with, and I
would hate to bring trouble to the door of a relatively small NPR station. The ‘no
such thing as bad publicity’ ethos does not cut any ice with radio stations
especially if I broadcast an errant ‘fuck’ or even a ‘shit’ during a show that
gets broadcast at 1pm on a Sunday afternoon. Once I’m happy that all is squeaky clean I am
ready to record the show as-live and send it in. As I do the hour long show in
real time I don’t make any edits to it, which means I might have to start again
a couple of times if I fuck up too badly, but I try and avoid that if I can.
Besides, if I can handle live radio I can surely record an hour with no
mistakes? No.
While I am still trying to
find a suitable studio to record live sessions for USA play, I have decided to
give some of the sessions from The Sunday Alternative
an airing. This week I will be starting with Blue Vulture, who are of course ‘quite
good’. There really is no higher praise than that. There isn’t a system of
order in place, it is simply that a trawl through the memory sticks and discs
uncovered this session first, so it is nothing more than a lucky draw to see
which ones I play. I will be playing The Wild Man Of Europe’s set as they were
the last guests I had on, there’s also Simon Waldram, Chloe McShane and others
from Nottingham to be going on with. I will have to find them first as they
could be anywhere, I am currently trying to sort my archive into order but I
just don’t have the time to be honest.
