One of my two favourite
Sundays of the year was today, the day the clocks change to accommodate the
changes in the daylight hours. Or something, I’m not entirely sure what the
point of this is because as far as I’m concerned I can’t see the benefit of it
being slightly lighter than usual in the morning. The reason I love this day so
much is the fact that I get to spend all day telling the time in ‘real life’.
For example, when it is one o’clock in the afternoon, it is twelve o’clock in
real life. All day long I would say this to Mandi, which is one of the many
reasons why I am such a catch.
To circumnavigate the confusion
that hits people every time the clocks change, we changed the clocks before we
went to bed. However, my phone spends the night on the bedside table and I
forgot to change the clock on that, so when I got up in the night to go to the
toilet I didn’t know what time it really was. I can’t remember what time it was
exactly, but for the sake of narrative we’ll imagine it was four o’clock.
Because I didn’t know in that moment which way the clocks had gone, I didn’t
know if my phone was an hour ahead or behind, nor did I know what time it was
in ‘real life’. I had to go downstairs and check the time on my phone against
the television to try and work out what was right and what was wrong. Once I
had changed the time on the phone I was settled, and I could go to sleep
knowing that it was in fact quarter past four, although in real life it was of
course quarter past three.
There’s always talk of losing
an hour of sleep on this change into summertime, but I don’t think it is really
a problem considering that it takes effect on a Sunday so you don’t have to get
out of bed too early anyway. If the clocks changed in the middle of the week
then you might be slightly fucked when you lost an hour and had to get up for
work. Actually that would be terrible considering the disorientation you get on
the Sunday of change. It’s bad enough not quite knowing what the time is, and
carrying around that jet-lag feeling all day. Imagine doing that while you were
at work.
Tonight we watched a compilation
of the best Disney moments on Sky Disney, which I soon realised was a cleverly
put together advert for upcoming broadcasts on the channel. I never used to
have a lot of time for Disney until Emily got into it and we collected the
classics to watch at home. The animation on the older stuff is a thing of real
beauty, especially considering that you’re actually watching a huge flipbook. It
was on at five o’clock, although in real life of course, it was four o’clock.
